Easy Gardening

So we here at the Farm and Market have been doing a lot of planting. We have been planting at Grahamwood Elementary, at our Farm, and at our houses. The Urban Farms team is excited about this season, cause it's planting  season.  Each change of season we learn something new and we love that we get to share that with you.
At the Market we try not to let anything go to waste, whether that's through composting, donating ripe produce, or replanting. Outside the Market we planted some potatoes that sprouted. You can see little green leaves coming up and soon we will have potatoes! You can do the same with garlic and onions.  So starting your own garden of root vegetables  is really quite easy. We will even sell you sprouted potatoes for $0.25 a lb.
Our garden center has compost $3 a bucket and flowers and vegetable plants.  The Boys and Girls Club is expanding their recipes and started making hummus! Each week we will have a different flavor and all of them are delicious!
See you Saturday!

Potatoes and Beets

Hello Market Folks!

This past week has been Spring Break for many, but for us it has been "so many people are free to help, so let's get all our big projects done!" Ben has had so many extra hands this week and was able to be a big part of helping Grahamwood Elementary put in a garden. The plants in the garden center are beautiful and they have inspired Catherine to try out her green thumb and plant potatoes and flowers at her house.

Its been exciting getting ready for this season. Bringing back favorites from last year, like Mama Dee's Italian Ice. We've been talking with community members about performing at the Market and also hosting story time with the kids on Saturdays. Good things are happening here and we are excited you are a part of supporting us in that.

So things to look for this weekend: Shelby Farms Beets, Italian Ice, lots of plants, compost, and we will be selling potatoes ready to plant for $0.25 a lb.

Happy Planting!

Full Bloom

Hello Market Folks!

Well another week has gone by and the Urban Farms team has been going nonstop. Ben is trying to stay 5 steps in front of the weather and Catherine is contacting all our summer suppliers (making sure you don't have to go a moment longer without Mama Dee's Italian Ice!). Feel free to let Catherine know your favorite flavor :)

In case you were wondering, now is the time to plant. And you are in luck, because we just got a huge delivery of vegetable, herb, and flower plants. So this Saturday come by and get all of your gardening needs here. Our plants are heirloom, no chemicals were used, and are priced right. The Urban Farms Garden Center is in full bloom!

And don't forget we have seeds galore for your garden as well. You can plant some Purple Thai Egglant, Sweet Yellow Peppers, Rainbow Swiss Chard, Purple Cherokee Tomatoes, Emerald Evergreen Tomatoes, Serrano Peppers, and for you Vols fans some Rocky Top Lettuce Mix.
So come and see us!

Check In and Save

Have you seen our pictures on Facebook? Our "hoop houses" at the farm are going up and this is awesome because it means we will get to extend our growing seasons! This week we have been so blessed and encouraged by the volunteers that have come in to help us get ready for the busy season that's just about upon us. Please don't be fooled, it's not Spring yet, but we are going to be ready when it is.

On that note, we are trying to clean up the Market, so if you are looking for any scrap wood or fence, please come by and load up. See Catherine and she will point out what's for grabs.

Well the big news this weeks is why we love Facebook. That may come as a shock (it was to us), but we found that it is super useful in providing ways to help you save. On our Facebook page there is an option for you to "check in" when you come to the Market. We have set it up so you'll receive a coupon you can present on your phone or print out to bring in to the Market. We will be changing the deal periodically, so continue to "check in" and save!

This week when you "check in" you will get a free cup of Urban Joe (hot or iced) or 10% off your purchase.

We are also giving out samples of our Strawberry and Chocolate Milk from Rock Springs Dairy.  That alone makes the trip by here worth it!
See you soon!

Garden Center

Market Friends!
We hope this past week has found you well.
Farmer Ben has been wading through compost and getting the ground and seeds ready for planting. I hope this makes you as excited as it does us. Every day we get closer and closer to warm weather where everything grows green and tall!
The Market has started making iced coffee again, thanks to the warm weather and the request of some of our volunteers, and the tables are all set up outside ready for produce. In a few short weeks we will be getting all kinds of new plants to sell outside, that's right, in our new Garden Center! We will have everything from compost to worm casting to organic garden soil in perfect-size, take-home bags. Heirloom seeds are in and if we don't have what you are looking for, we can get it.
Back by popular demand: Rock Springs Dairy started making Strawberry Milk again! And it will be in today!
As a final reminder, we still have a few tote bags that give you 10% off everything you buy when you bring them in (just think of all you'll save over the summer!).
Fresh Local Free Range Eggs from what looks like a flock of chickens who won't quit laying (hooray!), and the last of the winter squash (sad).
If you are looking for ways to get involved and love volunteering, we will be looking for some extra hands this summer. Contact Catherine and she will get you the details.
Thanks for supporting us, we REALLY appreciate you and LOVE seeing you at the Market.
